Detailed Analysis
In an immediate comparison between the Ninja Creami and the two Cuisinart ice cream makers, the Creami came out well on top. The ICE-21 and the Creami were closer, but the Ninja Creami still felt a bit smoother. The Ninja Creami can make very smooth, ice free, ice cream, if you give it a properly balanced mixture. What's more, unlike every other domestic ice cream maker (except perhaps the Lello), it's firm enough to eat immediately.
So it gives me great pleasure to say that the incredibly inexpensive Cuisinart ICE-21 outperforms every other cream maker I have ever tested (with one notable, and very expensive, exception). The Cuisinart ICE-21 makes noticeably better ice cream than every other ice cream maker I have tested except the Lello 4080 Musso Lussino, which is usually around 10 times more expensive! The Cuisinart ICE-21 costs roughly half the price of the Ninja Creami.
Perhaps the biggest reason why we recommend the Ninja CREAMi is because of how easy it is to use. With some other ice cream makers, including the Cuisinart model, you have to prechill a bowl in the freezer before placing the ingredients inside and whipping them up on the spot. But the CREAMi comes with two lidded pint containers, and you simply throw in your ingredients and freeze the containers with the mixtures inside. However, both require 24-hour advance planning.
Ice Cream & Lite Ice Cream: Turns protein shakes and simple bases into legit, creamy ice cream. Sorbet: Crushes frozen fruit + minimal liquid into perfect sorbet. Gelato: Higher fat bases (like whole milk or cream) yield restaurant-quality gelato. The Ninja Creami excels with healthy, protein-rich, and alternative diet recipes that traditional churners struggle with.
Whereas the Ninja CREAMi can make a pint of ice cream at a time (unless you have more frozen pint containers ready to go), the Cuisinart ice cream maker can make 2 whole quarts in one go. This feature also makes it great for large families or gatherings. The Cuisinart's 1.5-quart capacity significantly exceeds Ninja's 16oz pints.
Unlike other ice cream makers, the Ninja Creami will fit quite comfortably on most countertops. It's thin and tall and not too deep. If you can fit a Vitamix (or similar bender), on your countertop, you'll be able to fit the Ninja Creami. However, this is where the beauty of the Ninja Creami comes in. I simply put the tub back in my regular freezer, waited for it to harden closer to 0 °F (-18 °C), and then gave it a quick re-spin. But with the Creami, you can just re-spin and the ice cream is as good as new!
The Ninja Creami will only work with mixtures that have been frozen for 24 hours in advance. The only thing you really need to prepare is ensuring the freezer bowl is frozen for at least 24 hours before churning. Both require 24-hour preparation time.
I measured the Ninja Creami running at between 71 and 81 decibels. And remember, the Ninja Creami runs for less than a couple of minutes. While a regular machine will run from 20 to 40 minutes! The Ninja is louder but runs much shorter.
The regular Ninja Creami has a relatively small 16 oz capacity per beaker, which may not be enough for some families. However, the Ninja Creami Deluxe uses bigger 24 oz capacity beakers. The Cuisinart's 1.5-quart capacity is better for large groups.
Cuisinart backs this model with a 3-year limited warranty, which is longer than most competitors in this price range. After 50+ batches, our test unit shows no signs of wear or performance decline. Both are built for durability with dishwasher-safe parts.
